As the young adult population grows, the special needs of this age group are more apparent, highlighting discrepancies between resources deemed adequate for the “traditional” ages seeking treatment versus the resources required to adequately address the needs of individuals between the ages of 18 - 25 years old. Considering that healthy and well-adjusted young adults often demonstrate a lack of judgment and poor decision-making abilities, young adults with chemical dependencies have compounded problems. Age-appropriate immaturity and lack of life experience combined with the complex issues related to substance abuse (and its associated lifestyle) leads to individuals experiencing a treatment environment that has ineffective interventions and community peers with whom they cannot relate. Horizon Village has developed generation-specific treatment strategies that have yielded positive outcomes to accommodate the maturity and developmental differences that exist between older and younger adults.
