Path To Recovery

The Path To Recovery includes true stories of consumers who overcame many obstacles with the help of Horizon Health Services to turn their lives around. Last names have been omitted for privacy. Here are their stories:

  • Kevin - Kevin is a recovering drug addict diagnosed with bipolar disease.
  • Francie - “I turned to crack cocaine and ended up in prison.”
  • Sally - When she was a teenager, Sally, now in her late 40s, drank beer and smoked pot with friends...
  • Sandra - At age 15, Sandra began treatment for what doctors labeled as “depression.”
  • Shasta - Shasta feared she would lose everything she’d worked so hard for.  And that’s when she started making mistakes.
  • Miranda - “I had no self- esteem, I felt ugly and I hated myself.  I didn’t know it, of course, but it was all due to my illness...”
  • Martin - “Martin started abusing marijuana and alcohol when he was barely a teenager...”
  • Luke - Luke began his addiction by stealing alcohol from his parents’ cupboard and pills from the medicine cabinet at 14.
  • Dave - “When I used, I didn’t have to think or feel, I just had fun and forgot about the pain. I didn’t think I had a problem.”
  • Brad - He went to his first casino in college. His gambling wasn’t yet out of control, but Brad knew he had a problem. He also developed an addiction to alcohol...
  • Doug - He’s in his sixties, but one of Doug’s goals is to go back to school. “I know I still have something to offer,” he says, “and I believe God wants me to help others avoid the path I’ve taken.”
  • Raquel - Raquel came to Horizon a little more than a year ago. In her mid-30s, she was alcohol, opiate and cocaine dependent, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and had hearing problems from being punched in the ear by an abusive male friend. ...
  • Terry - Terry hurt her back badly enough that her doctor prescribed pain pills and patches. But when the pain was gone, Terry was addicted...
  • Daniel - At 17, Daniel has already seen a lifetime of sadness and hardship. His father was murdered shortly before Daniel was born. About a year ago, his mother died very suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving Daniel – the youngest of four children – an orphan and pretty much on his own...
  • Chip - If you met Chip, you’d probably see him as a personable…
  • Nate - Nate was barely into his teens when he started hanging out with the wrong kids and experimenting with marijuana and alcohol…
  • Shantelle - Shantelle is a woman in her mid-30s who is recovering from a dependency on alcohol, crack cocaine and marijuana…
  • Gregory - Gregory was 12 when he took his first drink. By age 19, he was using crack cocaine. As a roadie for a rock band, Gary had no trouble getting coke on the road and, besides, “everyone else was doing it.”
